There are plenty of signs you're a dog mom, but let's be honest — you already know. You knew the moment you said "we're just going to look" at the shelter. Still, for the record (and for tagging your fellow dog moms in the comments), here's the official checklist. The pack demands accountability.
The Essentials
- Your camera roll is 4,000 photos of the same dog, and you can locate any specific one in under ten seconds.
- You've said the phrase "my child" and meant the dog. Multiple times. Today.
- You have a vet on speed dial and a pediatrician on... nowhere.
- Your bed is technically his now. You're just allowed to sleep on the corner.
- You've canceled plans because the dog "seemed a little off."
- You know his birthday. You do not know your own mother's birthday without checking Facebook.
- You've thrown him a birthday party. With a cake. For dogs. That he ate in four seconds.
The Lifestyle
- Your purse contains treats, poop bags, and exactly one thing that belongs to you.
- You've spent more on his Halloween costume than on your own.
- The phrase "who's a good boy" is your most-used sentence, including at work.
- You've baby-talked to the dog in public and felt zero shame.
- Your Amazon recommendations are 90% dog products. The algorithm knows who you are.
- You've taken a sick day for a vet appointment and told your boss it was "a family emergency." It was. He's family.
The Devotion
- You've hand-fed him when he was sick and considered it bonding, not gross.
- You've compared his schedule to a toddler's schedule. Unironically.
- You have strong opinions about dog food brands and will defend them at dinner parties.
- You've cried at a dog movie. You've cried at a dog commercial.
- You've said "he's not spoiled, he's loved" with a completely straight face.
- Your holiday card features the dog. Your name is in small print.
- You've bought him a Christmas stocking. And filled it. And wrapped the presents.
The Advanced Level
- You can identify his bark from three rooms away, through a closed door, over the TV.
- You've cooked him a special meal "just because."
- You've debated getting a second dog "so he has a friend" — the friend is for you, admit it.
- You've used the phrase "fur baby" without irony since approximately 2019.
- Your phone background, lock screen, and most recent text are all the same dog.
- You've left a party early because "he's been home alone too long." He was asleep. The whole time.
- You've apologized to him. For things he didn't notice. In full sentences.
- You've said "let me check if he's allowed" before RSVPing to anything. Including weddings.
- You have a nickname for him, a nickname for the nickname, and a nickname he only answers to when treats are involved.
- You've referred to yourself as "mom" when talking to him, and to your partner as "dad," and neither of you blinked.
- You're reading this list nodding, and you've already sent it to three people.
